Yes, of course take it out for the day, and lift its skirts, because this means it not being ‘stood up’ Many, but not all, of our pages carry date information on the various rifles illustrated or discussed, where it has been possible to be sure of data. There are a number of methods by which a rifle can be dated, or at least bracketed between certain years of manufacture. For the latter, dates of introduction of military arms can be located within the Government “List of Changes” LoCs as can dates of obsolescence and of modification or upgrade to later marks. You may not necessarily find specific date information within the text of particular pages, but often the images of advertisements or catalogue entries contain some dating ‘give-away’, such as the year in which a particular rifle achieved a notable competition score by someone, but which data is in graphic format and therefore not “searchable” by a text search engine. Do not briefly glance over a page and assume that the information you require is not there. It may not be immediately obvious, but careful observation may provide you with the information for which you are looking. Such research is a major part of the joy of owning, collecting and shooting classic or historic rifles.

Key: Admin , Global Mod , Mod. BSAs are strong and solid guns – and should be reliable, though who knows what may have been done since it was made. Repairs are often not of ‘original’ quality. Date – I will leave to others more knowledgeable. Choke should be measured. In the UK how much choke is not normally marked on the gun – and may well have been changed since originally made anyway.
One bit of general knowledge, BSA were one of the first to machine make guns such that parts were truly interchangeable. I agree with John, BSAs are really solid guns, infact i used to own one and hunt with it. The pattern is great and the barrels are strong. But who might know what would have happened in the trade.
The most important part is are you buying it from a gunshop, or is it from a seller himself? About the choke you would definitely need to measure because even if it is not altered, choke can mean full choke, three quarters , half choke etc. But most of the British shotguns are manufactured with three quarters choke. All the best!

The Birmingham Small Arms Company Limited BSA was a major British industrial combine, a group of businesses manufacturing military and sporting firearms; bicycles; motorcycles; cars; buses and bodies; steel; iron castings; hand , power , and machine tools; coal cleaning and handling plants; sintered metals; and hard chrome process. After the Second World War, BSA did not manage its business well, and a government-organised rescue operation in led to a takeover of such operations as it still owned.
Those few that survived this process disappeared into the ownership of other businesses. It was formed by a group of fourteen gunsmith members of the Birmingham Small Arms Trade Association specifically to manufacture guns by machinery. New machinery developed in the USA installed at Enfield had greatly increased its output without needing more skilled craftsmen. Swinburn under the chairmanship of John Dent Goodman

The second set of tables are lists of the merit badges, arranged in chronologic order by date of last revision to the pamphlet and date of last revision of the requirements from most recent to oldest. The publication number appears in the copyright statement near the front of the book, and below the UPC code on the back cover.
In some cases, the publication number and SKU are the same, because no revisions have been madesince the pamphlet was ffirst issued. All of the Merit Badge pamphlets were reissued, with new publication numbers, on August 1, As indicated in the “Merit Badge Library” listing in the current Scouts BSA Requirements booklet, there is only one merit badge with a pamphlet with a copyright date earlier than – Surveying. For that 2 badge, the old and new pamphlets are interchangeable, with the only difference being the color illustrations.
So, in general, with that exception, Scouts should no longer use the old black and white pamphlets. As new pamphlets are issued, when they contain new requirements, Scouts have the option of starting with the new requirements as soon as the pamphlets are issued, or they may start work using the old requirements until the next edition of Scouts BSA Requirements is issued.
